Something I've always loved about being a writer is the fact that my words might live on when I die. I am sure this notion has crossed many writers minds. If we ourselves are not immortal, well, perhaps our thoughts are. With that in mind, 2008 was the year I discovered a fiction novel entitled 'A Swift Pure Cry' by Siobhan Dowd, and when I delved into the pages of this book, I had no idea that sadly the author had already passed away. 'A Swift Pure Cry' immediately captivated me. Dowd's words flowed perfectly as her use of irish dialect added an immediacy and authenticity to the setting.  I came to know and sympathise with the sweet and tender protagonist of the story Shell, an unfortunate teenage girl coping with adolescence. I laughed, cried and was taken back to a few nostalgic moments of my own youth. The book was compelling, yet uplifting and memorable. Touched by the tragic story, I also recall how saddened I felt that this lady could no longer utilise her great talent and continue to move us with her words, yet I was wrong.
