If Katie Price is an Author, I am a Vampire!

Paradise, a fictional tale launched by Katie Price, has sold over 10,000 copies in it’s first week upon hitting the shelves.

In a cleavage spilling tutu, the human Barbie look-a-like posed confidently at a HMV launch this week, alongside two muscle-busting Ken’s!

All well and good for the ambitious and successful Price we say, but a rather hard punch to the stomach to thousands of dedicated and struggling author’s across the UK.

What is even more ironic about the farcical display in HMV, is that not only has Katie Price admitted to not even liking fiction, but that a vast majority of the general public frantically queued for hours to buy a copy of her book, and have her sign it.

Are we nuts? Totally. Which makes Katie Price and her management utter genuises thank you very much.

A couple of months ago, I spotted a news report regarding the conception of ‘Paradise.’

Instead of reading about the slog, sweat and inspiration that took Katie to the top of the bestselling book charts, I was given a vague clue as to how the book came to light.

Katie chose a ‘theme’ she liked, and said what she wanted in the book.’

Picture Katie Price sprawled on her large dazzling white sofa, her assistants hovering in the background. She leafs through a booklet as if she were choosing fabric colours for a new set of curtains. Replace those fabrics with story theme’s and some dull, hare-brained characters.

The conversation with her publicist goes something like this:

“What would you like in your new book Katie?”

“Oh let me think, erm, erm… a rock star! No no wait.. a pop star and glamour model.. like me.. like er really beautiful and all that! Yeah, yeah…. oh and a footballer, they’re still popular ain’t they? Yeah I wanna write a new book like that.”

“Great Katie, we’ll have it finished in a few weeks. “

That ladies and gentleman, is Katie Price’s contribution to British literature.

Do I sound jealous? Hell Yes!

But am I? Hell Yes!

But I’m mostly very very mad! Some writer’s really don’t deserve to be in print, but many actually do deserve a lot more recognition for their efforts than Ms Price has (and ever will) contribute to her novels.

What we are seeing with this larger-than-life woman, is a product of society’s modern vacuous desires.

Women seethe with envy at the very sight of her every day. Women are sickened because they want to be as successful as the new Mrs Reid. They want to look flawless, be adored and get stinking rich, but they don’t actually want to be her.

At the same time, we are astounded, and over-whelmed by this woman, who promptly re-invents a new career every few months and rams it down our throats with nauseating assurance.

The fact that Price is talent-less is completely un-true. Price is probably the most talented hustler in the entertaiment industry yet. She has also worked extremely hard to ‘not care’ what anyone thinks of her, and that takes strong guts and a lot of self-certainty. What her true values in life are, nobody really knows, it seems as though the waves of fame have blown her true sense of reality into dust.

She is what she is, and if she’s happy with that, who can blame her?

Like it or not, Price has successfully amalgamated a multi-million pound fortune in just being ‘Katie Price/Jordan’ or whatever other persona she desires to be. The public adore her, despise her, and she knows full well that the toxic combination of both those things are literally what keeps her in the limelight.

But when it comes to the best-selling book ’Paradise’ is she stepping on people’s toes a bit too firmly? Publishers trip over themselves to secure the rights to her ‘books.’ Why are the general public buying into this? Have we any choice?

I wonder what will be next for the genius persona Ms Price, a wobbly win at Wimbledon? An announcement as the new Ambassador of Europe?

God help us, and bless you Ms Price for giving the media and myself the opportunity to discuss you so freely, even though our words may never reward us as fruitfully as the words in your books will continue to reward you.

You have more chance of becoming a vampire, than she does of being an author, and her fans are empty-headed clones of her!

I’ll never understand how this woman gets away with this type of deception.

How she can call it ‘her’ book is beyond me. It just goes to prove how ‘thick’ some of the general public are, surely?

Paws, you must have been sitting in on this meeting! That sounds just about right.

@Louise, yes she has indeed admitted to the book being ghost written, and without a hint of shame.

Isn’t it so easy to join the ‘I hate Katie Price’ gang? I am sure many writers have had ghost writers and have not had quite as much vitriol thrown at them. In another article on this website about Chick Lit, T Martin makes the comment, “They [Chick - Lit books] quite frequently appear on best-selling Bookcharts worldwide, so are you then implying that all these authors/readers lack intellect?”
Isn’t it easy to answer this question on this subject as a safe ‘yes’?
Do we hate her more because of her looks, her success or her audacity to try to make a success of a career in writing fiction? I am sure I could think of many people who have made their careers in fields in which they have not been trained as equally as I can think of people who are famous for having no discernable ‘talent’. We live in a world where only the beautiful succeed, so you can’t blame her for what she has turned herself into. Do we hate everyone who has ever had plastic surgery, or wears make-up and short skirts? It is interesting how we choose to be so judgemental, don’t you think? It is after all a free choice and a free world in a democracy?

I can’t say that I have any interest in reading her book and would have put it firmly in the ‘chick-lit’ category – but reading the defense of that particular genre, I guess those who hate Ms Price but love ‘Chick-Lit’ would firmly and passionately disagree.
How many of you who hate the vacuous fame industry support it by watching the ‘reality TV’ programmes, such as X Factor, or Big Brother, and buy ‘hello’-type magazines and tabloid newspapers, I wonder? Looking at the ratings and newspaper/magazine sales, I guess that a vast majority would.

  9. Socialpaws Says:

I agree with quite a lot of your sentiments Jo Jo. However, I think there is a distinctive difference in this particular case than with many other ghost-written books. Most serious writers aren’t (usually) claiming also to be pop-stars, TV stars, models and so on. Ms Price wishes to stick her finger in every pie, and a poor one at that. Can she write fiction? No! Can she Sing or dance? No!

There is the underlying element of confusion for some, as to why her books are flying off the shelves if she didn’t write them. It appears that the general public are buying into the Katie Price ‘brand’ rather than the products, which is a modern consumer trend unfortunately.

  10. Jo Jo Says:

@Lady May, you are so right (recent comment in Chick Lit debate). In a review of Cowell’s autobiography on this website, Socialpaws says, “But to be fair, how can we not hold even a little admiration for this very intelligent being who has not only created a personal fortune, but also transformed himself into one of the most powerful business men in the globe?”
How many women do we hate for being attention seeking, money orientated, fame obsessed celebrities in contrast to how many men? Are we in fact still living in a world which will hold a bit of admiration for men with business acumen, but call the woman cold hearted, bitchy, shallow or vacuous?
So why exactly do we hate Katie Price?
Authors such as Will Self and Danny Wallace are known as much for being presenters and celebrities as they are for their books, and many ‘celebrities’ try their hand at various other art forms, “You are likely familiar with the names Ronnie Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Dennis Hopper, Jane Seymour, Pierce Brosnan, John Mellencamp and Martin Mull. You know these names because you are familiar with their work as singers, musicians, and actors, but did you know that they are also respected painters and photographers?” (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/56303/multitalented_celebrities_actors_singers.html?cat=49) What about the careers of starts such as Kylie Minogue, Lord Sebastian Coe, Ronald Reagan? These are all stars who started in one career and ended up in another.
As for the ‘brand’ of celebrity – well wasn’t Andy Warhol so right way back in the 1960s?

@Giddylady; you are right, it is very hard to play the devil’s advocate with Miss Price, and, yes all the others have a discernible talent, however, she is by far not the only talentless celebrity to make their name in the entertainment industry. It is just interesting to me that the press (and then by default the public) seem to fixate on one person to hate. This person is usually (though not always) a woman, with big boobs and willing to show them off.
It is society’s fault; not theirs.
